West Coast traveled to Melbourne in Round 1 of the 2000 season and faced a daunting challenge against the reigning premiers the Kangaroos under lights at the MCG.

In a brilliant display, the Eagles stunned the ‘Roos and won 24.10 (154) to 16.15 (111) with Phil Matera (six goals), Scott Cummings (five) and Fraser Gehrig (four) wreaking havoc in a potent forward line.

Ben Cousins amassed 33 disposals for the Eagles, while Peter Matera was best afield with 30 possessions and three goals.

For the ‘Roos, Evan Hewitt bagged three goals, while Brent Harvey (26 possessions), Peter Bell (25) and Shannon Grant (24) were prominent.
