First quarter blitz buries Peel
WEST Perth has won the inaugural Charity Shield match at Arena Joondalup, while also surging past Subiaco into third spot with a 124-point demolition job of Peel this afternoon.
After producing their best opening quarter of the season last week, the Falcons went one better, with a blistering nine goal display that effectively killed the contest by quarter time.
The percentage boosting 28.11 (179) to 7.13 (55) win was the Falcons’ highest score this season, and also made it Peel’s sixth loss by 100-points or more.
Caleb Shadbolt starred in the Falcons busy forward line, booting four first half goals, and finished with seven, while Brent LeCras rediscovered some form, kicking four goals and collecting 21 possessions.
However, not to be outdone was hard running midfielder Ray Bartholomew, who turned in a career best performance, finishing with 31 disposals, eight inside 50 entries, 23 marks and two goals.
Anthony Tsalikis (3.1) profited from some brilliant set up play and precision passing by Bartholomew, who is now among the front-runners to win the Breckler Medal.
Fan favourite Lewis Harvey also chipped in with three goals and ruckman Chris Keunen (17 touches and 26 hit-outs) enjoyed his best foray in the centre and around the ground to dominate opponent Jacob Williams.
Disappointed Peel coach Trevor Williams urged his charges to win the last quarter, but it was never likely to happen after they lost the first three.
Playmaker Rory O’Brien again led the way with 34 possessions, as did Harley Bennell (24) and Kieran Butcher (23).
