A second quarter surge has given East Perth a thumping 49-point upset win over East Fremantle at Fremantle Oval on Saturday.
The Royals failed to register a major in the first quarter, but piled on six goals to one in the second to eventually run home comfortable winners - 12.13 (85) to 4.12 (36).
The blustery conditions at Fremantle Oval played havoc early, as both sides struggled to adapt, with 9 kicks going out of bounds on the full in first quarter.
The Sharks failed to capitalise on a strong four goal breeze in the first, and paid dearly in the second, as the Royals arrested a 23-point lead at half-time.
The home side managed to cut the margin to 15-points heading into the final quarter, but coughed up any chance by conceding five goals to nil in the last.
On-baller Craig Wulff was best on ground for the Royals, with 33 possessions and one goal, while fellow midfielder Jeremy Humm worked hard all day to finish with 28 possessions.
Royals full forward Andrew Merrington had a field day up forward, booting five goals, including three in the second quarter.
Kym Monteath, (35 possessions) Daniel Dalby (33) and David Bongiascia (29) were the major ball winners for the Sharks, but were let down by their side’s inaccurate kicking, as well as a lacklustre forward line.
The Royals will be buoyed by this win, as they take on the top three teams in the competition over the next three weeks.
