A Northern Territory Team is poised to play in a southern State League football competition, such as the SANFL or WAFL, over the next few years.
The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough, announced at TIO Stadium in Darwin on Saturday October 27 that a re-elected Coalition Government would commit nearly $4 million dollars over 4 years to both support AFL Northern Territory in establishing this team and in addition to conduct development activities in Indigenous communities.
On Sunday September 2 Kevin Rudd announced that if the Labor Party was elected it would provide $500,000 a year for five years for the Territory Team.
AFL Northern Territory will receive $2.5 million dollars of funding from a Federal Government over 5 years to establish the team. This funding will also support establishment of a Territory Netball Team to play in Netball Australia’s new state based national competition. We are pleased that both political parties recognize the significant role that Australian Rules football and sport plays in the Northern Territory.
The commitment of the Northern Territory Government, the AFL and corporate Australia will cover the balance of the $1.4 million dollars required for this project.
AFL Northern Territory is currently finalizing its Business Plan which will form part of its bid to join the SANFL and WAFL.
