A big crowd was on hand on Saturday at TIO Stadium to see the Tiwi Bombers make their debut in the NTFL. The first match of the triple header saw last years Grand Finalists, Waratah’s easily account for Wanderers, 19.15 (129) to 4.13 (37).

In the game the crowd came to see, it was new St. Mary’s coach, Brett Hand who won the tactical battle when his Saints held on to upset the highly fancied Bombers by 8 points. 8.7 (55) to 6.11 (47). The late game on Saturday night between reigning premiers Southern Districts & Darwin brought back memories of that Escort Cup at Waverley in the seventies, when it had to be called off due to the sprinkers coming on. The captains agreed to disband the game with Districts well ahead on the scoreboard. 18.10 (118) to 2.7 (19).

Sundays game at the newly redeveloped Southern Cross Oval was meant to be a celebration for the Palmerston Magpies but no one told the Tigers as the Nightcliff side got their season off to a good start with a 5 point win. 14.8 (92) to 13.9 (87)

This weekend sees another triple header at TIO Stadium with the 4 losers from round 1 in Tiwi vs Palmerston & Darwin vs Wanderers doing battle, while the winners from last weekend go head to head when Southern Districts take on Waratahs under lights on Saturday night & the Saints travel down to Nightcliff oval on Sunday to take on the Tigers.
