New rivalry beckons

WEST Perth and Peel Thunder will be battling it out for the inaugural Charity Shield, when they take to the field for Saturday afternoon’s Round 18 clash.

The Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF) will sponsor the event, which pits the oldest club in the WAFL against the newest club - in the hope of creating a spirited rivalry.

It also recognises the polarity between the two teams, with Peel, the most southern WAFL club and West Perth, the most northern WAFL club.

Falcons chief executive Gerry O’Dea said the club was determined to generate a traditional rivalry with Peel, as well as assisting the local community with a substantial donation to a local charity each year.

Peel CEO Russell Clark welcomed the initiative and said he was looking forward to seeing the rivalry grow even stronger in the next few years.
