WEST Perth assistant coach Rob Hunt and his wife Amanda received an earlier than expected gift last Monday, after she went into labour four days before her due date.
The couple said there was no warning sign prior to the birth, but pretty soon found themselves on a late night dash to St John of God Hospital in Subiaco.
Their plan was to leave two-year-old son Mitchell with Amanda’s parents, but as it turned out, he ended up being a handy little helper.
“Mitchell was encouraging in the back seat, saying ‘it’s alright mummy’,†Rob said.
“He was a good little coach, as it turned out.â€
His brother, Callum was born at 12.55am last Tuesday morning in the front seat of the family car on the side of the freeway.
Rob said his idea to pull over near Stirling train station made it even easier for St John Ambulance to locate where they were.
He was able cut the umbilical cord in the back of the ambulance, while Amanda was able to hold her newborn on the way to the hospital.
They were met by their family and their obstetrician Michael Gannon, who was a rival East Perth team doctor when Rob played for West Perth.
Little Callum weighed in at 2.99kg and he and his mother are doing well.
But in an ironic twist, the Madeley couple were watching the season finale of Desperate Housewives, where Felicity Huffman’s character gives birth unexpectedly at home.
Rob jokingly turned to his wife and said: “Imagine if this happened to us tonight.â€
