Falcons on lookout for new skipper

West Perth will use the WAFL preseason competition to groom a new captain after veteran player Clayton Lasscock elected to relinquish the position due to work commitments.

The 28-year-old who has played 97 matches for the Falcons since making his debut in 1999 has completed the training required to become a fully qualified fireman and will therefore be unable to attend football training on some occasions throughout the year – reason enough for Lasscock to make the decision.

Falcons’ football manager Ryan Lasscock told Footygoss on Monday that the club would take time to consider a new leader, but several candidates had already shown the qualities required to lead the team.

“You look at the leadership group from 2007 with Jason Salecic, Josh Pearce, Dan Hunt and Dion Fleay and those are the ones that will probably be in mind,” Lasscock said.

“They’re all 23 or 24 so you’re looking at having a pretty good succession plan there.”

Meanwhile, the Falcons have announced the signing of former East Perth-listed youngster Clayton Radcliffe and ex-Wodonga midfielder Mark Doolan for the 2008 season.

Former player and ex-Kangaroos-listed utility Brent LeCras has also returned to the club in 2008, signing a new two-year deal with the Falcons.

LeCras played in the SANFL competition in 2007 with the Port Adelaide Magpies.
