The West Coast Eagles will continue to allow players play ‘special’ events even though touted ruckman Nic Naitanui did a hamstring during the AFL grand final sprint.

Eagles assistant coach Peter Sumich said the club won’t forbid their players from taking part in novelty events like the September 26 run that saw the rising star get his injury.

The Eagles have already started pre-season training this week but Naitanui is still at least two weeks away from being able to join them.

Sumich reckons the injury was nothing more than bad luck.

Naitanui, who born in Sydney to Fijian parents, was taken at pick number two overall in last year’s AFL draft as a highly rated future player by coach John Worsfold.

Naitanui, who wears number 9 guernsey, suffered a set-back early last season too during pre-season training when he experienced knee soreness and had precautionary surgery.

When he played in the WAFL, he was touted as the next big thing with many punters believing he’d be top pick.

His debut game in the AFL demonstrated his athletic ability with another spectacular mark as well as 3 kicks, 8 handballs, 3 marks and 7 hit-outs, but subsequent matches were a bit of a fizzer.
