Melbourne and West Coast have met 31 times, with West Coast winning 19 to Melbourne's 12.
Melbourne has one of the best recent records of all the non-WA sides in the AFL against West Coast at Subiaco.
Travelling west proved a profitable venture for Melbourne in Round 19, 2002, when they became the first side to beat the Eagles at home in 2002, and regained a spot in the eight in the process.
Johnstone dominated the midfield with 29 possessions. Neitz again took control late in the game, kicking three of his four goals in the last term, and taking Melbourne to a six point victory after trailing by three points going into the quarter. Despite Phil Matera and Chris Judd kicking late goals for the Eagles, it was Melbourne's turn to register a narrow win in hostile territory. This was also Melbourne's most recent win over West Coast.
One of Melbourne's most memorable encounters in recent times with West Coast was also at Subiaco, in Round 22, 2000. A 70 point win to the Demons was highlighted by five goals to Yze, and four to Bruce.
Despite being ten points down early in the game, ten unanswered goals saw the Demons take control and the Eagles bow out of the finals race for the first time since 1989. Melbourne, however, had finished third on the ladder in the best finish for the Club since 1964, and was set for September action.
Those who have been involved in both clubs include Darren Bennett, Dean Irving, Andy Lovell, Craig Turley, and Phillip Read.
