SOUTH Fremantle claimed the minor premiership and West Perth scraped into the top four during the final round of the West Australian Football League on the weekend.

The Bulldogs were convincing 63-point winners against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval, with Andrew Siegert and Callum Wilson booting four goals each to set up the win and secure top spot on the WAFL ladder.

Swan Districts finished in third place and Subiaco remain in second despite their loss to West Perth at Arena Joondalup on Saturday. West Perth, who were playing to keep their finals hopes alive, fought back after trailing by four goals in the first half to claim a seven-point win and dislodge East Perth from the top four.

The Royals, who won seven of their last 10 games to move into contention for the finals, were relying on Subiaco to win at the weekend after sitting out the last round with a bye. The Lions’ loss relegated the Royals to fifth place while Perth finished sixth followed by East Fremantle, Claremont and Peel Thunder.

The WAFL also recorded a significant attendance milestone on the weekend, notching up more than 200,000 spectators for a season for the first time since WA became a two-team AFL state in 1995.

The first round of finals fixtures this Saturday, September 5, will see South Fremantle host Subiaco and West Perth head to Steel Blue Oval to take on Swan Districts, with the winner of the South Fremantle and Subiaco clash to progress to the preliminary final next week.

The loser will receive a second chance against the winner of this Saturday’s West Perth and Swan Districts game, while the loser will be eliminated from the finals.

In the Reserves competition, derby contests will feature in the opening round of the finals, with South Fremantle to play East Fremantle after finishing on top of the ladder, while East Perth and West Perth will clash as the third and fourth-placed teams.

Colts games will see top sides Claremont and Peel Thunder battle it out and Perth play Swan Districts in the other semi-final.
