WAAFL Announces Hall of Champions as of 2010

Thursday saw the Western Australian Amateur Football League announce the introduction of an Amateur Football Hall of Champions to honor only the best of the competition.
In May 2010, the first induction will be held, where the players will receive a specially designed lapel pin and certificate at the ceremony.

All the WAAFL clubs will be allowed and asked to nominate not only players but also officials who have shown exceptional dedication and commitment for the inaugural Hall of Champions night in 2010.

President of the WAAFL, John Davies, said that the aim of the awards was to “enshrine forever the champions of amateur football.”

Davies also explained that many of the potential nominees had made wonderful contributions to the national game, with many them being volunteers who did it for the love of the game and everything that comes with it.

“It’s these people, that haven’t previously been recognized that could win the awards.”
“Many individual clubs have honour boards for their club but to be named a champion of amateur football will give a new status to the heroes of our community game,” Davies said.

The general public will also be allowed to nominate ex-players, coaches, umpires, administrators and media representatives from 1922 onwards.

“At an Amateur level these awards will have the same peak standing as the AFL and WAFC’s Hall of Fame. With over 57 clubs, 200 teams and 13,000 players participating every weekend the people selected will truly be champions of Australian Football, ” Davies said.

The WAAFL is expecting to receive scores of nominations ahead of next year’s inaugural event with eight to 10 nominees to be inducted across all categories.

In WAFL news, the Fairest and Best Ward winners for 2009 have been recognized after what was an exceptional WAFL season, with all nine clubs announcing their Fairest and Best winners for 2009 over the last couple of weeks.
