There are four games scheduled for the West Australian Football League’s pre-season Variety Challenge this weekend.

Claremont will play Swan Districts at home, while South Fremantle play Perth, Peel Thunder take on Subiaco and West Perth play East Fremantle.

Because of the extreme hot temperatures predicted, clubs have been advised they will be able to use additional players on the bench the playing time for each quarter will be reduced.

The same will happen in the AFL NAB pre-season cup.

WAFL operations manager Clint Roberts said the use of precautionary measures would be decided at each game on the day.

East Perth has the bye after defeating Subiaco 10.11 (71) to 5.2 (32) in Round 1 of the pre-season competition last Friday night.

East Fremantle took down reigning premiers South Fremantle 12.14 (86) to 9.7 (61) at Fremantle Oval in the other round 1 contest.

The pre-season ‘WAFL Variety Challenge’ recognises the partnership formed between the children’s charity and WA Football League, which will also see the WAFL donate all gate profits from the four weeks of competition to Variety.

THE West Australian Football League’s four-round, pre-season Variety Challenge kicks off this Friday night, February 19, with Subiaco and East Perth to clash at 5.30pm at Medibank Stadium.

The action continues on Saturday night when South Fremantle will host East Fremantle at Fremantle Oval. Rounds 3 and 3 will be played over the following fortnight, with the fourth round of pre-season to be played on March 13.

This year’s pre-season competition was named the ‘WAFL Variety Challenge’ to recognise the partnership formed between the children’s charity and WAFL, which will also see the league donate all gate profits from the four weeks of competition to the charity.

Variety WA provides practical help to enrich the lives of WA’s special kids - from overcoming illness, getting mobile again, or just making life a little happier.

In 2009, Variety provided tangible assistance at a grass roots level to 116 individual children and families, while at the same time responding to the needs of the greater community state-wide by supporting major projects and working in partnership with 78 other children’s charities and organisations - to a value of $1.99 million. In total, Variety WA directly assisted 9587 children in 2009.
