A PARENT who verbally and physically abused an umpire during an under 15s game on the weekend has received a life ban by the West Perth District Junior Competition Committee.
The investigation yesterday found that a community volunteer and an officiator became involved in an altercation during a game between Quinns JFC and Yanchep JFC last Sunday.
As a result, the offender, who was a club-appointed boundary umpire from Quinns was found guilty of:
1. Abusing the central umpire
2. Approaching the umpire in an unauthorized manner
3. Making contact with the umpire on multiple occasions
The Quinns JFC also received a fine, and acknowledged the severity of the issue, but insisted the actions of one person did not reflect the actions or the work being done by the club.
West Perth District Manager Andrew Ridley condemned the incident and said any form of abuse towards anyone just trying to do their job would not be tolerated.
“We want to send a strong message that we don’t want people who behave like this involved with our game,†he said.
“We highly value our umpires and actively promote respect towards umpires through the “Umpiring is Everyone’s Business†campaign, as well as ongoing education sessions with clubs in the district.
Mr Ridley also acknowledged the work done by volunteers, and expressed his disappointment in what he hopes is just an isolated incident.
“There are approximately 5000 club-appointed boundary umpires in community football competitions each weekend, and this is the first time we are aware of an incident involving one of these volunteers,†he said.
