Bitter pill for Sharks

The AFL has knocked back applications from both East Fremantle and the WA Football Commission for financial compensation in light of teenager David Swallow joining the Gold Coast 12 months ahead of schedule.
However, the WAFC will still reward the Sharks with their 2010 draft payments in advance to cover Swallow’s departure.
The 17-year-old created AFL history last year when he became the first player to sign with a club one year ahead of the national draft.
The Gold Coast Football Club declared it would select Swallow after seeing him dominate in the under-18 national titles, despite being just 16-years-old.
The Gold Coast will play in the VFL this season before entering the AFL in 2011.
But East Fremantle argued that because they had lost a player to a State league, they deserved a transfer fee on top of the draft payments.
But the AFL quashed any chance of that, saying he hadn’t joined a normal State league club, therefore draft rules should still apply.
East Fremantle CEO Peter Capes said the club had received a letter confirming it would get assistance from the WAFC over the transfer fees.
“This caught everyone on the hop because it wasn’t part of the draft regime. We’ve lost a player 12 months earlier than expected,” he said.
