Cameron Agnew has been appointed general manager of Senior Metropolitan Community Football in Western Australia following the departure of former CEO Brendan Cullinan.

Cullinan has accepted a high performance role with the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Agnew is set to commence his role on January 11, 2010, heading up the Senior Metropolitan Community Football which encompasses the WA Amateur Football League, WA Women’s Football League, Mercantile Football Association and Peel Football League and includes more than 250 teams.

The former West Australian Football Commission development officer said he was excited about the opportunity to oversee WA’s community competitions after spending the past three years as recreational services manager with the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River.

“I’m really looking forward to being completely involved in footy in a professional capacity,” Agnew, who was also chairman of the Goldfields Regional Football Development Council said.

“Football is in a strong position at the moment and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone involved and another exciting year ahead.”

He has also umpired league football in the Goldfields, spent three years as fitness advisor for the WA State Country Football Team, three years as rehabilitation coordinator for Claremont Football Club and more recently, headed up the South West Future Directions committee.

Agnew said his starting point as general manager role would be meeting stakeholders to learn more about issues facing community football and where the challenges lie.

He will also review local future directions documents and engage clubs on growing the game, provision of grounds, coaches, umpires and support staff.

WA Amateur Football League president John Davies said he was looking forward to the year ahead under Agnew’s new leadership and direction.

“I’m confident we’ve got another big season ahead and that Cameron will be able to continue and build upon work that has been done to ensure the ongoing success of metropolitan community football in Western Australia,” Davies said.

WAFC Director of Football Grant Dorrington echoed Mr Davies’ sentiments, describing Agnew as an ideal candidate for this important community position.

“Cameron has a wealth of experience in the football industry and his recent experience with local government and football facilities gives him a great advantage in championing the cause and ongoing benefits of being involved with our great game at grassroots level,” Dorrington said.

“We all look forward to working with Cameron when he commences next month.”
