Sydney Swans star forward Michael O’Loughlin announced on Tuesday afternoon that he would retire at the end of the 2009 season.
O’Loughlin stated that his slow recovery from a pre-season operation on his fragile ankle joint and been a big factor in choosing to retire in a few months time. He explained that his role requires him to be very nimble on his feet and is something that he struggles with, which when it comes down to it should be his top weapon against opponents but simply isn’t anymore.
The 32-year-old made his debut in 1995, playing in a club record 293 games for the Swans and booting over 500 goals.
Should the veteran play the ten remaining games in the season for the Swans, he’ll become the first 300-gamer from the club.
Some of his finest achievements include being a two-time All-Australian, being named in the Indigenous team of the century and winning the club’s best and fairest in 1998.
