AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou has said a firm “No” to the people of Tasmania who hope to snatch one of the two licenses ear-marked for Gold Coast and West Sydney.
Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon made a late appeal to the AFL to consider the Apple Isle for its expansion plans heading into 2011-2012.

Demetriou stuck to his guns and has confirmed that Tasmania was not a priority despite its rich football heritage. “"Our key priority markets, and I’ll repeat them again, are the Gold Coast and Western Sydney,” Demetriou told a press conference outside AFL House.

“Football is moving forward in Tasmania, but does that translate into a licence at this stage? No.”

Tassie Premier Lennon believes the fight isn’t over and will submit a proposal despite Demetriou’s tough comments “We don’t believe the book is closed ... footy fans haven’t had their say yet,” Lennon told reporters at a press conference at Telstra Dome.

“[Tasmania] is bread and butter of the AFL, and we’re saying look after home base first.”
