Young Swans edge out Falcons in preseason classic

It was an advertisement not only for WAFL football on Saturday night at Medibank Stadium, but for the fans of two sides who failed to make the finals of the premiership season in 2007.

Swan Districts and West Perth played out an old-fashioned ‘humdinger’ of a match under lights in the second semi-final of the preseason series with the ‘black and whites’ winning by two points at the death.

Swans won 15.7 (97) to 14.11 (95), but looked down and out, trailing by 16 points early in the last quarter.

Fremantle recruit Clayton Hinkley slotted a goal to get Swans within five points as the game ticked into its final two minutes and with a minute to play WA Under-18s star Nicholas Naitanui swooped for the winner.

Swans did shoot out to a 19-point lead at quarter-time, but a six-goal quarter from the Falcons saw Brian Dawson’s side trail by two points at the main break.

Swans regained the lead at three-quarter time, but three Falcons’ goals in the opening six minutes of the final term meant they needed something special to post a win – and they delivered.

West Coast draftee Tony Notte was outstanding at full-forward for Swans, bagging five goals including an amazing snap in the final minutes of the match, while Tim Geappen kicked two majors in another strong preseason display.

Rookie-listed Eagle Ryan Davis and veteran Shane Beros were also prominent.

The Falcons were well served by Docker Adam Campbell who snared six goals, but the left-footer remained sidelined in the last quarter after sustaining what looked to be a minor upper leg injury.

Joel Rice and Craig Smoker were both important for the Falcons with their tireless running, while ruckman Chris Keunen had the better of former Collingwood big man Guy Richards.

Ex-Geelong player Matthew Spencer was reported for tripping in the only real down point for Swans who will face Subiaco for preseason glory next weekend.
