Swans shade gutsy Tigers

Swan Districts overcame a slow start and a determine Claremont outfit to claim an important 31-point victory at Claremont Oval today.

In heavy conditions Swans kicked 13 goals to four after quarter time to run out winners, 15.7 (97) to 10.6 (66).

The Tigers took full advantage of a very strong breeze to kick the first five goals of the match with their small forwards in Simpson Medallist Ian Richardson and Preston O’Keefe dangerous.

The visitors settled late in the term before controlling the second quarter and trimming the margin to 12 points at the long break.

It was the third quarter that was decisive with Chris Yarran sparking his side kicking two goals, as Swan Districts restricted Claremont to just one major with the breeze, and they took a one-point lead to the final break.

But the Tigers weren’t about to lie down and Richardson kept his side in the contest with two goals in four minutes to put the hosts back in front with ten minutes to play.

However, Swans responded with a couple of quick goals of their own through Jeff Garlett and Brett Wolfenden to secure the points before three late goals rubbed salt into Claremont’s wounds.

Yarran, on a break from state under 18s duties, was a valuable inclusion, finishing with five goals, and young midfielders Jason Fleming and Clayton Hinkley were outstanding.

For Claremont there were none better than Michael Warren who was strong in defence and in the ruck, while Andrew Browne, Jack Reagan and Richardson (four goals) worked hard throughout and another WA under 18s representative in Matt DeBoer was impressive in his seventh WAFL match.

The victory moves Swan Districts back into second place on the WAFL table and gives them some confidence leading into their massive clash with Subiaco at Steel Blue Oval next week.

Despite the gutsy performance, Claremont has now lost seven on the trot and slide to eighth on the ladder with a game against the improving East Perth next weekend.
