Swan Districts were outscored seven goals to nil in the opening quarter of Saturday night’s WAFL preseason game at Medibank Stadium, but rallied in the remaining three quarters to defeat East Fremantle by 18 points and move into the semi-finals of the three-week competition.

Swans won 15.13 (103) to 12.13 (85) with star junior Chris Yarran booting five goals in a thrilling display.

The Sharks got out to a 43-point lead at quarter time, but were outscored 15 goals to five after the first change and were simply outrun by a fresh and fit looking Swans side.

State 18s ruckman Nicholas Naitanui showed glimpses of why he is touted as being a chance to be drafted in the top echelon of juniors this year and his ruck work after quarter time proved to be handy for Swans who were well served in the middle of the ground by their captain Adam Lange, Josh Roberts and Brett Robinson.

David McKinlay was a strong forward target for the ‘black and whites, managing to snare three majors, while new recruits Andrew Krakouer, Guy Richards and Llane Spaanderman chipped in with reasonable showings.

For the Sharks, Michael Griffiths was handy around the ground, while Leith Teakle, Chris Basile and Theo Adams were creative. West Coast’s top draft pick Chris Masten showed his class for the Sharks, kicking a goal and gathering several touches.

Swans will face West Perth next Saturday night for a place in the Grand Final of the preseason competition.
