Swans confirm Piani retirement

Swan Districts veteran Mark Piani has retired from WAFL football after more than a decade in the game.

The 32-year-old, who played 137 league games in his career, played just 11 matches in 2007, suffering from a series of injuries.

Swans’ football manager Brendan Parker told Footygoss on Friday that Piani came to the decision this week.

“He’s suffered another couple of injuries recently at training so I think that coupled with the couple of injury-riddled seasons he’s had led to him to finally to decide that he needed to give it up,” Parker said.

Meanwhile, Parker added that the feeling around Steel Blue Oval was one of excitement leading into the new season.

“Training’s going great guns at the moment and the new recruits are all fitting in really well,” he said.

“It’s a new lease of life down there with a new coach, fresh training ideas and that combined with a few new players coming in adds a fair bit of spark around the place.”

Swans will conduct their first intra-club match of the year next Thursday night with a second match scheduled for the following Saturday ahead of their preseason series opener against East Fremantle at Medibank Stadium on March 1.
