SWAN Districts officials are confident their star midfielder Brett Robinson will be back before the finals, after he received radical surgery on his injured knee last month.
It was feared Robinson would be out for the 2010 season after suffering a torn ACL and some meniscus damage to his knee in round 4 against East Fremantle.
However, according to Swans football manager Matt Peach, the 24-year-old could be back much sooner than expected because he underwent the breakthrough LARS surgery instead.
“His signs are good, he’s been up and about, and if his rehab and recovery stays on the right track then he should be back probably two weeks out from the finals,†he said.
“He had the surgery back in April, but because he also had some meniscal damage as well, it has set him back a little further, but he will be starting his gym and pool work by next week.â€
Sydney Swans premiership midfielder Nick Malceski was the first AFL player to undergo the LARS (Ligament Augmentation and Reconstructive System) technique.
The procedure involves the patient being fitted with an industrial strength polyester fibre that supports the damaged ligaments in the knee, and acts as a scaffold through and around the ruptured ligament and allows it to repair itself.
Players can resume in as little as 10 weeks, in much better shape than the conventional knee reconstruction, as there is no collateral damage to the hamstring or patella tendon that dogs so many players following the operation, and leads to a significant chance of arthritis once their career is over.
MEANWHILE injured Swans defender Wes Lammie is back at full-time training after going down with a PCL strain six weeks ago, and is likely to line up against West Perth next fortnight.
