INJURED Swan Districts recruits Matt Riggio and Tom Roach have been given a 50-50 chance of making their WAFL debuts against reigning premier South Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.
The pair had been racing against time to be fit and ready for the start of the WAFL season, but Swans football manager Matt Peach said they were still suffering the effects of some old injuries.
“They’ve been carrying some niggles through the pre-season, and we’d rather not take the chance of bringing them back too early, and rush their injuries and recovery time.
“At this stage, we’re not 100 per cent sure when they’ll be ready, we’ve been nursing Matt’s injury, and Tom’s had his (injury) for the last 18 months,†he said.
Riggio, a former North Melbourne and Peel player is still battling to overcome shin splints, which is inflammation of tendons and muscles around the shin bone, caused by overuse, and worsened by running, jumping and even walking, particularly on hard surfaces.
Roach, on the other hand has a bruised heal, which has been giving him discomfort since sustaining the injury playing in the VFL last season.
The club will monitor the pair during training this week before making a final decision on Thursday as to whether they will match up against the ‘Dogs.
