In search of Miss Swan Districts
Posted Jun 26, 2008 - 20:00 PM
Swan Districts Football Club are keen to bring back some talent to the club - in the form of Miss Swan Districts.
The Miss Swan Districts Title was last awarded in the 80’s and we have had ringing endorsement from previous winners (see below from Ann-Marie) as we have brought back a title that they had a lot of fun competing for in their youth.
The ladies selected for the competition will go through vigorous screening, but we have already had an entry from WA’s Miss Australia entrant and from some of the ladies from our women’s team.
The event will be part of the Swan Districts Players Revue that will feature performances from both our men’s teams and women’s teams.
The Players Revue and Miss Swan Districts event will be held on the 5th July, 7pm till late. Tickets are $25 p.p or a table of 10 $200 (including a bottle of champagne or bottle of wine per table).
Tickets can be pre-booked at the club on 9279 8700 or tickets will be available at the door.
From a former Miss Swan Districts - Ann-Marie
1983 - I was 16 (nearly 17). We were at the club after the first game
having a few drinks (yep I was 16), and was approached by the then CEO
to enter. A firm push from a friend and that was that.
I had just started working fulltime at Wesfarmers in Bassendean and was
still working part time at Red Rooster which was always a mad place on
footy days.
Swans had always been and is still a big part of my life and this was
one way of becoming involved seeing that unfortunately I couldn’t play!
There was only two entrants that year myself and Mareena Lindroos
(unsure of correct spelling). We became good friends and had a lot of
fun.
The crowds that year were huge - that year was the biggest crowd ever at
Basso with 18000+ against West Perth. We slaughtered them! We also had
Stephen Michael’s 200th game when the Freo train line was opened
especially for the game. Again we won he got reported and we spoiled
his day.
The Mitsubishi Colt had just been released and we had the great fun of
trying to stay sitting on the bonnet elegantly in a footy jumper being
driven around the oval at half time or the best was Peter Borello from
Buccanneer Pools having me sit in the spa going around the oval! I’ve
got photos somewhere.
We were given our sash to wear (which I’ve still got) when selling
raffle tickets and badge selling, helping with the match awards for the
colts, reserves and league were the main duties. We would work out
between us who we wanted to give the prizes to as we had to give the
winners a kiss! The bigger nights were the auction and quiz nights where
there was a lot of PR with the visitors and special guests.
Having the photos for the Budget, Swans, The Daily News (remember
that)and Westside Football was also a lot of fun and a little daring.
Most of the players were good fun and helped out if we were getting a
little more attention than we were supposed to. Always fun getting
changed in the toilets and coming out in your jumper and then trying to
get through the wall to wall crowds upstairs after winning a game! I’ve
still got one of my jumpers, but the one in the main photo I was wearing
Ed Blackaby’s.
I made many good friends from the club including management, players and
supporters during this time and it is great when you run into then 25
years later and they still remember!
We both represented Swans at the Miss Football competition which was
held at Subiaco Oval and then the final night in the function room of
Allendale Square.
We didn’t take off the then prestigious Miss Football crown, but came
away with lot’s of goodies, inc champagne, $20.00 Ampol fuel voucher
(that would have filled the tank then), chocolates, etc.
Winning the 2nd of the 80’s grand finals topped off a magic year and yep
I would have done it all again
Ann-Marie
