AFTER just three seasons at the helm, Swan Districts coach Brian Dawson yesterday announced that 2010 would be his last with the black and whites.

Dawson told the playing group of his decision before the start of training on Tuesday night, revealing that ongoing commitments next year had forced his hand.

“It’s in response to a lot of speculation, innuendo and rumours that have been bubbling around the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“It’s appropriate to set the record straight and let the players here know firstly that if I was going to be coaching anyone next year it was going to be Swan Districts.

“Because of some work commitments which I’ve had to hold off and delay, that I can’t really delay any more, I won’t be able to continue.

“I will be overseas for six or seven weeks during the season next year. It will be impossible and impractical to carry on,” Dawson said.

Playing just six league games for Swan Districts in the 1970s, Dawson turned his hand to coaching, where he took his reserves side to the 2006 premiership.

He also assisted under then league coaches John Todd and Steve Turner from 2002 to 2006, before being appointed senior coach for the 2008 season.

His introduction saw Swans rise from the doldrums to play off in a grand final loss against Subiaco that year, before again bowing out to the Lions in the preliminary final in 2009.

Swans will play in a hat-trick of finals campaigns under Dawson, and with Subiaco out of the picture this season, the outgoing coach hopes he and his side can go out with a bang.

“It would be terrific, but it’s not about me or who the coach is, it’s about the team, the players and the club. It would just be fantastic for this playing group to stamp itself as premiership players and for this club to win an overdue flag,” Dawson said.
