Former South Fremantle gun Scott Watters has been announced as league coach of the Subiaco Football Club for the next three years.

Watters is currently in the second year of his original three year term and the club has moved quickly to secure his services for the 2009 season and beyond.

On his reappointment Watters said he was ecstatic about the Subiaco playing group and that he was looking forward to the “challenges that we have not only for the remainder of this year but also the development of the numerous promising young players coming through”.

“Hopefully this will provide the players and club members with confidence that I am committed for the long term at the Subiaco Football Club,” Watters said.

Watters said that the key to helping players achieve their best was to create a high performance environment where communication was open and honest and everyone involved “aggressively seeks continual improvement”.

Lions chairman Neil Randall said he was confident Watters would keep Subiaco at the forefront of player development, education and feedback.

“With the likelihood of several senior players considering their future at the end of the season it is important at this early stage to provide them with confidence of knowing the structure of the Club moving forward,” he said.

Watters was drafted from the South Fremantle Football Club to the West Coast Eagles in the AFL in 1988, before later playing for the Sydney Swans and Fremantle.

He was a member of the 1985 Teal Cup winning side, the first year that Western Australia had won the national championships.

In November 2006 he was announced as the coach of the Subiaco Football Club, replacing Peter German.
