WAFL Road to the Finals
Posted Jul 6, 2008 - 14:32 PM
With eight rounds remaining, and such a tight WAFL ladder from second to sixth place, the road to the finals is as exciting as it has been in the WAFL for a number of seasons.
Here’s what each of the finals aspirants will face in the lead up to September.
SUBIACO (1st, 56 pts)
PT (a), EP (a), SF (h), bye, C (a), SD (a), EP (h), bye
There is no doubt that the reigning champions will claim the Minor Premiership in 2008 but the last few weeks have revealed a few chinks in the Subiaco armour with a loss to Swan Districts and a come-from-behind narrow victory over West Perth.
The Lions still have two byes to come, including one in the final round of the season, and will have an opportunity to gain revenge against Swans in a fascinating Round 21 clash.
SWAN DISTRICTS (2nd, 36pts)
EP (h), EF (a), bye, SF (Newman), WP (a), S (h), P (a), PT (h)
Swans currently lead the race for second place but face a tough lead-in to the finals with games against all five of the other top six teams to come in the final five rounds.
If Swan Districts are to gain the double chance that comes with finishing second on the ladder they will certainly have earned it after taking on all of the other finals contenders.
SOUTH FREMANTLE (3rd, 32pts)
P (h), bye, S (a), SD (Newman), EP (h), EF (a), bye, C (h)
It will be a bit of a stop-start finish to the home and away season for the Bulldogs with two byes to come within the final seven rounds of the year.
South’s final three matches (against the bottom three teams) appear straight-forward on paper but the loss to Claremont in Round 15 will remind the Bulldogs that there are few easy games in the WAFL this season.
PERTH (4th, 26pts)
SF (a), C (h), bye, WP (a), EF (a), PT (h), SD (h), EP (a)
Perth certainly has its destiny in its own hands in the lead-up to the finals, currently sitting within the top four and with games against all teams from second to ninth still to come.
Matches against South Fremantle, West Perth, Peel and Swan Districts loom as the crucial battles for the Demons and if they can win three of those four their final drought should be over.
WEST PERTH (5th, 26pts)
EF (a), PT (h), bye, P (h), SD (h), EP (a), C (a), EF (h)
Despite not being in the top four at this stage there is a genuine feeling that the Falcons are well placed to snatch a finals berth come Round 23.
With four games against the bottom three teams in the last eight rounds and only two games against top four teams remaining, the draw appears to be in West Perth’s favour.
PEEL THUNDER (6th, 24pts)
S (h), WP (a), C (Bunbury), EP (a), bye, P (a), EF (h), SD (a)
The Thunder are only two points out of the top four with eight rounds remaining and their draw over the last two months will give them the opportunity to sneak into finals action for the first time.
Away games against West Perth, Perth and Swan Districts appear to be critical and if the Thunder can cause an upset in two of those matches it might just be enough to snatch fourth place.
