League leaders Subiaco have overcome a seven-point deficit at the final change to secure an impressive 18-point victory over a gallant West Perth at Arena Joondalup today.
Despite kicking into a strong breeze in the final term, the Lions monopolised possession and dominated the final quarter to run out winners, 12.12 (84) to 10.6 (66).
West Perth threw out the challenge in the third quarter kicking six goals to two into the wind only for Subiaco to rise to the occasion when the game was on the line.
For the victors there were none better than key forward David Mapleston who claimed 12 marks and ruckman Luke Newick who had the better of Mark Seaby in a fascinating duel.
Mark Haynes worked hard for his 24 possessions in his 100th WAFL game while Shaun Hildebrandt, Chad Fletcher and Phil Read all had an impact and Greg Broughton was outstanding the defence in the final term after a quiet first three quarters.
As always Aiden Parker and Darren Rumble were solid in the defensive half, combining to keep the dangerous Adam Campbell to just seven touches.
The Falcons defence produced possibly their best effort of the season against the potent with Dan Hunt leading the way restricting Brad Smith to just two goals and winning a number of one-on-one contests against the Bernie Naylor Medallist.
Dustin Burns collected the most possessions on the ground (25) while Kepler Bradley roamed far and wide to be one of the Falcons best.
