Smith bags eight as Lions rebound

Leading goalkicker Brad Smith put on another vintage display to finish with eight goals as Subiaco returned to the winners list with an impressive 48-point victory over Perth at Medibank Stadium today.
The Lions, who suffered their first loss of the season in a surprise against Swan Districts last week, were too strong for a gutsy Perth line-up, winning, 18.12 (120) to 11.6 (72).
Smith started the game in ominous form kicking three majors by half way through the first quarter and added goals in each quarter to finish with eight and move his season tally to 70 in just 13 games.
Subiaco sprung a surprise at the start of the match with state forward Blake Broadhurst lining up as a loose man in defence, a role he certainly enjoyed, as he combined with running defenders Greg Broughton, Kyal Horsley and Rob Forrest to give the Lions great drive.
Midfielders Caine Hayes, Mark Haynes and Shaun Hildebrandt were also productive and veteran Allistair Pickett played a brilliant cameo bobbing up with a goal and having a hand in at least three others.
At numerous times throughout the match it appeared that the Demons were about to be blown away but each time Perth managed to hang in the contest and moved to within 19 points mid-way through the third term before Subiaco seized control.
As always recruit Ross Young racked up the possessions in the midfield and received solid support from Brendan Jones and Troy Cook after a slow start.
In defence Tendai Mzungu played one of his best league matches and his tackling was a feature while the speedy Scott Siekierka continued his excellent form and made a number of exciting dashes from defence.
Forward Kane Ranstead led the Perth scoring with three goals and looked dangerous every time that the Demons moved the ball quickily into their forward line.
