St Kilda is taking its entire playing list, including rookies, to Perth this weekend as a bonding exercise coinciding with the match-of-the-round against Fremantle, the Age reports.
The exercise, an initiative of coach Grant Thomas, will cost the club an extra $15,000. It was made possible by the Saints' VFL affiliate, Springvale, having a bye this weekend.
Thomas said it was about supporting the senior group in foreign climes, and offering hope to those not yet among the senior team. "We're six games in, Springvale have a bye this week and we've got a big game in a place where there's not a lot of support available to the senior team," said Thomas yesterday.
"We thought it was appropriate that the 17 players who aren't playing in the seniors are there to support the others from start to finish, from the aeroplane to the dining, to the game and afterward. Plus it's really good for the players from Springvale to know that they really are part of the club and strange things can happen. They can get a call-up any time."
The Saints will fly 39 players - their 37 listed players plus two rookies - to Perth. The extra numbers mean they will be able to send 17 players to a planned breakfast function organised by the club's Perth-based supporter group on Saturday.
