WAFL Round 9 Preview

South Fremantle v Swan Districts @ Fremantle Oval

This is a massive clash between two highly-rated teams which will have a big impact on the WAFL ladder.

The Bulldogs had the bye last round and suffered a defeat at the hands of a resurgent Perth the previous week and need to bounce back this round at home.

Likewise, Swans will be keen to show that last Saturday’s shock loss to bottom team East Fremantle was an aberration and will enter this game with some confidence after defeating the Bulldogs at Fremantle Oval twice last year.

As always, South Fremantle will keep a keen eye on both the West Coast and Fremantle selection table and with the likes of Ryan Murphy, Daniel Gilmore and Toby McGrath returning, may have too much class for Swan Districts.

Prediction: Bulldogs by 32 points

Peel v East Perth @ Rushton Oval

It’s difficult to know what to expect from this contest.

Peel had started the season with great promise but has slumped to consecutive three-figure defeats, while East Perth has been unimpressive for most of the season.

The Thunder has been boosted by AFL inclusions at times this season and will have Brock O’Brien in their line-up this week.

East Perth regain experienced pair Dean Brennan and Andrew Milles after lengthy lay-offs.

Prediction: Royals by 3 points

East Fremantle v Claremont @ Geraldton

East Fremantle broke their duck last week and would fancy their chances against an undermanned Claremont side that has struggled to win the close ones this season.

However, Brent Staker and Brett Peake, who were both impressive last week, will be unavailable this week and this leaves a large hole for the Sharks to fill.

The Tigers have lost four of their past five matches by a total of just 30 points and are beginning to lose touch with the top four.

It’s desperate times for Claremont, and if they are to make the finals this season, they must stand up this week.

Prediction: Tigers by 16 points

Perth v West Perth @ Eftel Oval

Perth is the form team of the competition, if you overlook the continued dominance of Subiaco, and could move into the top two if they can knock off West Perth this week.

The Demons’ midfield is particularly strong with Ross Young and Troy Cook in excellent form and has been boosted by the return of Sam Butler from a long injury lay-off.

The Falcons were in awesome form last week as they smashed Peel but will be without Adam Campbell, Rob Warnock and Kepler Bradley, all of whom have been recalled to the Fremantle Dockers, and should give Perth the edge.

Prediction: Demons by 29 points
