Sampi's Bark To Match His Bite

Ashley Sampi’s return to the WAFL may not be complete, but the process has begun...in earnest. While the Bulldogs are the buzz of the WAFL with the likes of Peter Bell, Jeff Farmer and Jamie Graham to rejoin the ranks, Sampi may just be on the right track to regain a place along side the other former AFL recruits. While Sampi returned with some work to do, assistant coach Glen Jakovich has endorsed his work rate. Speaking on 6PR on sunday night, Jakovich said Sampi had been making all the right noises, “Look he was overweight when he got back, but he’s doing everything that’s being asked of him and more. He’s doing all the work at training, plus some extra cycling sessions.”
Sampi’s hunger for success with the Bulldogs may be a sign of the feeling around the kennel at South Freemantle, having dropped out of the finals series in the first week after having claims as Subiaco’s main contender in 2008, the boom recruits suit the coaching staff’s stance on relying on AFL players to lever WAFL success. Jakovich went on to disclose that the match committee, having been stung by the lack of availability of their AFL stars in September last year, has made a concious decision not to lean too heavily on the in’s and out’s from the Dockers and the Eagles, “Injuries didn’t help, and we also got boned by both AFL clubs last year.”
The former Eagle pointed to the return of such quality players as an indication that the South Fremantle Football Club was a “good place, with good people.” While the South Fremantle Board had been succcesful in adding Bell to the roster, Jakovich quickly dismissed any speculation that Bell may not be the only big name to come out of retirement “They keep pushing me, but I’m just happy coming last every week at the 2km time trials we have, if one day I come second last, I might consider it.” You never know, John Dimmer may just be give a player or two the instruction to run a little more patiently than on previous Wednesday evenings…
