McManus must stay in media

Speculation that former Docker Shaun McManus could return to playing football – to South Fremantle of all clubs – is very worrying for me as both a Fremantle and Bulldogs supporter.
Don’t get me wrong, McManus, while not decorated such as the likes of Ben Cousins (dare I say it) and Matthew Pavlich, is decorated in the way he subtly demands respect and recognition for his efforts and tenacity on the field.
But let’s face it, his time was up several years ago and while Dockers supporters such as I, have watched those last few seasons with gritted teeth, it was refreshing that McManus stepped down give the younger blokes a go and start a new life doing something else, and fittingly in the media.
News that South Fremantle is trying to lure McManus out of retirement was perplexing. East Fremantle remain fairly confident their favourite son will stick to his former Sharks should he decide to put the boots on once again.
Look, I’m all for former AFL heroes to come out of retirement and add some skill, class and leadership to the WAFL, which by all accounts, desperately needs it.
But Macca, enough is enough.
Word on the street is that South Fremantle has informally approached McManus to join former Dockers teammates Peter Bell and Jeff Farmer.
But at 33, maybe it’s time to stick to another career.
There have been unconfirmed reports that South Fremantle football manager Jason Burton approached 33-year-old McManus, who is yet to decide.
Macca you had a sterling 228-game career with the Dockers and, from memory about 45-plus with the Sharks.
You’re a good player, but you make a better media personality. Stick to that and look after your three children.
And, thanks for the great memories and exciting plays at Fremantle.
