This season South Fremantle Football Club’s young, rising stars have an opportunity to show their worth at WAFL level, with the retirement of five senior players last year and the loss of many others.

Football manager Jason Burton said the reining premiers would hit the turf for pre-season training on February 6, with two intra club practice matches organised: February 6 at 8.30am at Fremantle Oval and another on February 13 at 9am.

“This will be the first chance for players to have a serious hit out in a real match, something they are all looking forward to,” Burton said.

There is a plethora of opportunities for youngsters this season following the retirements of Jeff Farmer, Peter Bell, Daniel Gilmore, Ray Smithers and Tim Malseed.

There were further openings after the departures of Luke Bairstow (country), Lukas Teague (golf), Brenton Edwards (work), Nathan Street (Tasmania), Nick Paine (Canberra), Brandon Matera (Gold Coast), Troy Ditchburn (work), and Matthew Michael.

South Fremantle is keen to get former East Fremantle Shark Andrew McCarrey onto the turf, who was recruited to bolster the Bulldogs’ forward line.

FootyGoss understands that South Fremantle officials are set to travel to Darwin and the Northern Territory shortly to scout more young players.
