Demons keen to recruit past star

PERTH may be luring back a former star to the club, following news that retired AFL forward Andrew McDougall is still keen to play in the WAFL this season

The 26-year-old had a change of heart after having trained three times with Perth during the week, and has decided to reconsider his football future at the club which helped launch his AFL career.

However, it is understood that McDougall, (West Coast/Western Bulldogs) who took a year off football last season, isn’t ready for a comeback right away.

Perth Football manager Rod Basell said the former Demon still needed more time to weigh up his options, saying he did not want to let anyone down.

“He is concerned by making a late decision to play that he is putting himself under pressure and is not really ready,” he said.

“He feels like he doesn’t want to let people down by not playing to the best of his ability.”

However, Basell said newly appointed Perth captain Steven Armstrong and coach Andrew Jarman had both reassured McDougall that he had plenty of time to make his choice.

“We’ve all been delivering the same message that Andrew didn’t need to be ready for round one,” he said.

“If it’s round five before he’s ready to play then we will wear that.

“He gives three options in that he can play as a forward, defender or a ruckman and blokes that can do all that are pretty rare.”

McDougall played 55 games for Perth, and was taken at pick No. 5 in the 2000 AFL Draft by West Coast.

He kicked 48 goals in 38 games for the Eagles, before switching to the Western Bulldogs in 2007, where he was unable to break into the squad, announcing his retirement from the club in 2008.
