Cook farewells game

VETERAN AFL and WAFL midfielder Troy Cook has announced his retirement from the game today and will play his last match for the Perth Football Club this Saturday.

The 302 gamer said he would have loved to see the Demons go deep into September, but a poor start to the season confirmed his decision to hang up the
boots just halfway through.

“I was almost going to give it away at the start of this season but I decided to play on with the hope of winning enough games to make the finals and just help the boys out.

“But unfortunately it looks like finals will be out of reach for us and I’m not enjoying my footy as much,” he said.

The 33-year-old returned to Perth following his retirement from AFL, and achieved a huge milestone against South Fremantle in Round 7.

“Playing my 300th game will definitely be something to look back on. I didn’t realise it was coming up after playing the games between Sydney, Fremantle and Perth but I am pretty proud about it now,” he said.

Cook said he would take a break from football for a few weeks and reassess his involvement down the track. Until then, he will spend more time with his wife Tam, new baby daughter Lola and 17-month old son Xavier.

Off the field Cook works for the David Wirrpanda Foundation and is also on the Diabetes WA Board and Country High Schools Hostel Authority.

In 2008 he won the Nowalenko Award which recognises an individual within the Australian Football family for their contribution to the game and the Indigenous community.

He arrived at the Demons in 1993, made his league debut the following year and was drafted by Sydney in 1996 after finishing second in the Sandover Medal count.

His illustrious AFL career included 43 games with the Swans before a return home to WA paved the way for 150 games and life membership with Fremantle.
