Thunder pleased with Ebert catch

Gun West Coast recruit Brad Ebert has been snapped up by WAFL side Peel Thunder in Wednesday’s allocation draft and the Mandurah-based club are thrilled to have the nephew of four-time Magarey medalist Russell Ebert on their squad list.

The 17-year-old who captained SA in last year’s NAB Under-18 Championships was the Eagles’ second pick (No. 13 overall) at last November’s NAB AFL Draft, but Peel were able to grab Ebert with the third pick of the WAFL draft after Perth took fellow Eagles’ recruits Will Sullivan and Scott Selwood with the top two selections.

“We were very happy that he (Ebert) was still available (at pick No. 3) and we’re pretty excited to have him down at the club,” Thunder football manager Steve Ashton told Footygoss on Thursday.

Ashton added that Ebert’s arrival gave the Thunder further South Australian flavour with Eagles’ defender Shannon Hurn already on the club’s list.

“He’s another South Australian like Shannon Hurn so he’s got pretty big boots to fill,” Ashton said.

The Thunder have already snared former East Perth big man Zac Beeck, former Bendigo Bomber Simon Rosa and ex-Lavington ruckman Brendan Page in the off-season, but Ashton expected the club to grab at least one other recruit before the start of the season.

“We’re sitting on a couple at the moment so hopefully we’ll pick up one or two more recruits, but we’re very happy with the way the squad’s shaping up at the moment,” Ashton said.

The Thunder finished eighth in 2007 with five wins and 15 losses.
