Peel's Haines calls it a day

JUST two days after Troy Cook announced his retirement from the game, one of Peel’s captains has also decided to hang up the boots seven years after he was first instructed by doctors to give the game away.

Daniel Haines told his teammates at training on Thursday night that a recurring knee injury had left him no choice but to retire after 128 games for the Thunder.

The former Fremantle squad member said the decision had been a long time coming and that juggling the pressures of family life and football had finally caught up with his body.

As a result, he will not be playing out a farewell game against Dockers teammate Troy Cook in the Foundation Day Weekend match at EFTel Oval on Saturday.

“It would have been nice to play in the game against Perth this weekend but the knee is no good,” he said.

“I had a fair bit to do with Cookie and he would be one of the nicest guys you meet off the field and a really good player on it.

“I’ve got a young family, like Cookie, and it was getting to me a bit, not being able to play and things that I wanted to achieve. It’s just disappointing when you are the captain and can’t play.”

Watching on from the sidelines is something Haines says he has become used to, and admits he would still love to be around the club in his post playing days.

“I’ll always be a part of the club in some capacity and it’s not like I’m leaving for good. I just need a bit of time to myself,” he said.

“I’ve sat in the coaches’ box a lot, being injured so much, and that’s something I’d look at doing.”

The 29-year-old played 16 games between 2002 and 2006 for Fremantle, despite being told at the time by surgeons to end a promising career in 2003.

Throwing caution to the wind, he went on to play 81 more games for Peel, with his last being a narrow loss to East Fremantle in round three.
