Peel Thunder advanced to the last four of this year’s WAFL preseason competition on Friday night on the back of an impressive 23-point win over Perth at Fremantle Oval.
The Thunder won 13.7 (85) to 8.14 (62) with WA State representative Hayden Ballantyne bagging three goals, while Kane Ransted also kicked three majors for the Demons.
The Mandurah-based side led at every change in an at times entertaining contest.
Key tall Brandon Hill booted the opening goal of the game for the Thunder after a skillful pass from ex-East Perth big man Zac Beeck, but Ransted cut the Thunder’s quarter-time lead to just five points with a goal after the siren.
Only three goals were scored in the second term with Ballantyne and Hill bagging majors either side of a Luke Nugent goal for the Demons after the ruckman was pushed into the forward fifty.
Peel’s ten-point half-time lead was extended with a Matthew Giumelli goal early in the third term, but Perth were hanging on and a goal to new West Coast rookie Will Sullivan gave Demon fans something to cheer about late in the quarter.
The margin was just eight points at three-quarter time, but the Thunder added 5.2 to 2.5 in the last term to run out convincing winners.
Former Carlton midfielder Ross Young’s form was outstanding for the Demons and he was clearly their best player all night, while Ryan Smith, Kade Lang and Ransted with three goals all tried hard.
Beeck, Ballantyne and Steven Chapelhow were prominent for Peel, as were Daniel Haines, Chris Atthowe and Alan McDonald.
New Demons’ recruits Ash Thornton and Cameron Heise were on hand to watch their new teammates, while Eagle Matt Rosa watched on as his older brother Simon made a solid debut for the Thunder.
