Melbourne defender Jared Rivers has been found guilty of negligent umpire contact.

Rivers was handed a $2,600 fine after he tripped field umpire Justin Schmitt in the third quarter of Melbourne’s loss to Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday.

Rivers tried hard to defend himself saying that he doesn’t see how he could have avoided making contact with Umpire Schmitt’s feet, after he backed away from a bounce at a slight angle making it almost impossible.

The jury didn’t deny that Schmitt backed away at an angle but still found Rivers to blame, because he was too close to the umpire, which players need to make sure doesn’t happen.

The AFL has forged on a crackdown on players who make contact with an umpire after the ball is bounced, with Rivers being the latest victim to face the consequences.
