It is very interesting that since 2002 the AFL has spent $30 million dollars to support the struggling clubs. For one reason or another the struggling clubs just cannot seem to raise enough funds to continue operating. Rather than let the club go to the wall the AFL has stepped in to support these struggling clubs.
Contrast NBL club the Sydney Kings who have till today to show that they have the funds to pay their players otherwise they forfeit their licence.
Is this a tack that the AFL should take or are the AFL not ready to let a number of Victorian Clubs go just yet? It is an interesting debate but if a struggling club does not want to relocate should the AFL assist with blockbuster games for those struggling clubs. Consider the Western Bulldogs who have started to hit their straps and are sitting up in the top four, will they not start attracting crowds to games with Collingwood and other top sides? Or is it simply that if you can get your on field game right the financial results will start to flow. But then the argument that arises there is the Kangaroos who have had success but have not had the ability to capitalise on the financial benefits that go with on field success? Its an interesting argument but we shall await and see whether the AFL eventually take the same line as the NBL who as a governing body do not have the funds to prop up clubs.
