The Hawks are set to appeal Coleman Medallist Lance Franklin’s two-match ban at the AFL appeals board on Thursday night.

Franklin was suspended at Tuesday night’s tribunal hearing after Hawthorn unsuccessfully challenged his original one-match ban for bumping Richmond’s Ben Cousins.

Franklin looks certain to miss Saturday’s do-or-die clash against Essendon, which will decide eighth spot on the ladder.

The rules on head-high contact were strengthened earlier this year in the wake of Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell’s jaw-breaking bump on West Coast rookie Pat McGinnity.
