Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has defended his verbal attack on AFL umpires and has opted to pay a $5000 fine instead of attending umpire education.
Kennett believes the issue should be resolved quickly and said he would pay the fine to avoid any risk of an AFL imposed sanction on the club, such as the deduction of premiership points.
The former premier also lashed out at AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson, accusing the AFL of hindering free speech.
In a final swipe at the AFL, Kennett assured Hawks members he would not cause any further distractions to the playing group.
“Be assured my future public comments will be as bland as those who seek to control us,” he said.
