Geelong chief executive Brian Cook has confirmed that the club has reached a contract agreement with star midfielder Joel Selwood.

His re-signing means the Gold Coast must scrap another name off its recruiting wishlist

Selwood has become one of the AFL’s most sough-after players in just four seasons, and was the subject of interest from Gold Coast.

However he has chosen to remain a Cat at Skilled Stadium.

“I can confirm that we have agreed to terms with Joel and his management, and that he will be staying at Geelong,” Cook told geelongcats.com.au

“We still have to finalise the paperwork but all parties have agreed to the deal.”

Cook said Selwood and his management had refused to meet with Gold Coast officials, which had always had the Cats confident he would stay.

Selwood’s re-signing now leaves Geelong officials to concentrate on re-signing Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett.

Selwood debuted in 2007, the year he won the league’s Rising Star award.

The youngster has played 77 games.

He played in Geelong’s 2007 and 2009 premiership wins and was last year named an All-Australian for the first time.
