Geelong have lost Travis Varcoe for almost 2 months after the forward broke his thumb.
The reigning AFL premiers Geelong will be without Varcoe for at least the first seven matches after he had surgery on Tuesday night, after sustaining the injury during the club’s practice match against Fremantle over the weekend.
Geelong football manager Neil Balme said the 21-year-old has been unable to determine how the fracture occurred.
“It’s one of those things that you can’t do much about,” Balme was reported saying on the club’s website.
“Travis can’t even recall it happening in the game.
“It was a bit sore on Monday so he got sent for a scan that showed the fracture and he went in for surgery last night.
“He will be in plaster for a month and then it will be two to four weeks after that until he can play.”
Varcoe’s absence comes after the Cats lost small forward Mathew Stokes, who is serving a club-imposed suspension for alleged drug trafficking.
Varcoe, who missed 3 matches with a shoulder injury last season, finished 2009 with 22 goals under his belt.
He has played 56 games since debuting in 2007.
