Geelong’s doctor has suffered a heart attack just minutes before the league-leaders were due to run on to the ground.

Geoff Allen is thought to have suffered the heart attack about 25 minutes before the Football Park clash in front of Geelong players.

After the Cats’ 11.8 (74) to 9.9 (63) loss to the Crows, Geelong coach Mark Thompson said the “shock loss” had little importance compared to the wellbeing of Dr Allen.

“He’s okay, he’s in hospital, he’s awake talking to his wife and family so that is great news,” Thompson was reported as saying post-match.

“It’s not great to see one of your family members, your doctors, nearly die on the footy ground before a game, it’s just incredible.”

Dr Allen collapsed and was treated on the arena in front of more than 41,000 spectators for about 10 minutes before being taken away in an ambulance.

As expected, Thompson said the scenes really unsettled the club’s coaching staff and players the 11-point loss to the Crows.

He said it was impossible to shield them from what was transpiring.

Thompson said the Doc’s health is “probably more important than a game of footy really”.
