Geelong are into the semi-finals of the 2009 NAB cup after they defeated Port Adelaide by 18 points at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Small forward Matthew Stokes proved the difference with a three goal last-quarter effort, leading his team to a messy 0.11.6 (72) to 1.6.9 (54) win.
Daniel Motlop and port Adelaide thought they were right back in the game, when Motlop unleashed a long range super goal early in the last quarter to bring the game back to the one point margin it was at during both the quarter and half time breaks.
Stokes had other ideas however, booting his first of three last term goals after Motlop’s impressive feat.
Chad Cornes missed an easy set shot from directly in front and was made to pay the biggest price when Stokes sent through his third.
Gary Ablett was missing from the Cats list but it didn’t seem to matter much, as Brownlow Medalist Jimmy Bartel racked up 28 disposals and Paul Chapman gathered 25 of his own.
For Port, Kane Cornes was the highest ball winner on the field (31), whilst Joss Carr showed he was happy to be back with his former team finishing with 26 disposals.
