Essendon have picked teenager David Zaharakis to debut for them on Friday night, despite the death of his ex-girlfriend less then a week ago.
The 18-year-old will make his debut against the Bulldogs in front of an expected sell-out crowd in the Bushfire Appeal match at Telstra Dome.
It ends a hard week for the teenager who is still coping with the death of his former girlfriend Melanie Shuey, who was hit by a motorbike while crossing a road on Sunday morning.
Team-mate Jobe Watson said it’s obviously a terrible thing for anyone to go through, especially for a young bloke like Dave, who was still really close to her.
Watson added that although Dave is still hurting a lot over the tragedy, he is very keen to take the field on Friday night and put in a good show.
