Injury-ridden Essendon forward Scott Lucas has retired from the AFL.

The veteran premiership player decided to end his 270-game association with the Bombers after a struggle with injuries – he is 31-years-old.

Lucas, who has only played 14 matches this season, has been plagued knee and elbow problems.

He had hoped to play against Fremantle this weekend, but said after Sunday’s performance against St Kilda (in which the Bombers won), he changed his mind.

“They played particularly well, I mean if they had have got belted by plenty than maybe the coach might have been speaking to me,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday morning at the club’s Windy Hill headquarters.

“It’s a classic case of my time’s up.”

In his career, Lucas kicked 471 goals, played in 148 winning and 120 losing matches and averaged almost 16 possessions per game.

In 2006 he kicked 71 goals to finish as the Essendon’s leading goal scorer.
